Quick Manga Facts
From when Usagi and Mamoru got married, to what their real ages are, to who Sailor Cosmos, Chibi Chibi and the Starlights are and other questions - all answered here.

When did Usagi and Mamoru get married?

In Manga Vol. 5 King Endymion explains that at the age of 22, Neo-Queen Selenity ascended the throne and gave birth to Chibi Usa. Now at the end of the manga, after Usagi/Eternal Sailor Moon defeats Chaos in the Galaxy Cauldron the next scene shows Usagi and Mamoru in bed (naked) and the situation is significantly different.

Above Usagi in the window can be seen the spires of Crystal Tokyo. And Usagi speaks of how Mamoru asked her to marry him the day before. Apparently, a significant amount of time has elapsed. Next page, Usagi and Mamoru are getting married and Usagi says at the altar that she feels the starseed of a new senshi being born inside her (Chibi Usa). (Obviously, they had sex and have conceived Chibi Usa)

After concurring with Ilsevet of the Moon Garden, we determined that Usagi (in order to give birth to Chibi Usa at age 22) would have to have been 21 when she married Mamoru. And Mamoru is 3 years older than her in the manga so he'd be 24. The spires of Crystal Tokyo again prove that construction of Crystal Tokyo has begun and such a contruction wasn't happening when Usagi was 16, so with all the facts combined the end result is Usagi is 21 and Mamoru 24 when they get married.

How old are Usagi and Mamoru?

    Anime
Usagi is 14 and Mamoru is in his first year of college so he'd be 18. However, according to anime memorabilia the exact birthday of Usagi is June 30, 1978 and Mamoru's is August 3, 1975 so saying they're 3-4 years apart would be correct.

    Manga
Usagi is 14 and Mamoru is a junior in high school making him 17. Haruka and Michiru, when they enter high school are sophmores and are 16. So the facts all add up.

Which is correct - Selenity or Serenity?

Both are correct but Selenity more so.

Naoko based the Sailor Moon series around Greek Mythology and wrote Usagi to be Selenity - an incarnation of the Moon Goddess Selene.

In addition, Selene was in love with a man from Earth, Endymion - who was a shephard. It is an ancient poem which she based their love upon where Selene and Endymion were in love and Selene begged Zeus not to let Endymion die but to let him be in a sleep. And every night she would visit him in his sleep and they would be together that way.

So Selenity would be the correct form of Usagi's name. The reason why the anime made it "Serenity" is because in Japan, the L and R are interchangeable when pronouncing it. Japanese cannot pronounce 'L' so they say it as an 'R' instead. That is why both are correct forms of Usagi's name but Selenity more so.

Who are the Sailor Starlights - Seiya, Yaten, and Taiki?

They are women senshi from the Kinmokusei star system who came to Earth seeking their Princess Kakyuu who had fled to escape the villain, Galaxia.

When they get to Earth, the senshi transform into men (ANIME) but in the manga, they disguise themselves as men. They believe that taking on male identities while on Earth will help them locate Princess Kakyuu because in their male disguise - they pose as singing idols. And girls, even Princess Kakyuu, would be drawn to male singing idols ;)

So does that make them really men? No. They are really women in the manga full time. And in the anime they take on that male form just temporarily. When they return with their Princess to Kinmokusei they return to female form.

Do the Senshi die?

Every soldier has a sailor crystal/starseed, which when they die, allows them to be reborn. All the senshi, no matter how many times they die, will be reborn some day.

What about Sailor Moon being 'eternal/immortal' forever?

In the manga, in the very last page, Mamoru watches his new wife run out to her friends from the church and says that new soldiers will be born but you, Sailor Moon, will be eternal/immortal.

What does he mean? It could be taken 2 ways.

    • 1) Usagi will never die
    • 2) She will die, as all soldiers do, but her legend will remain forever. All other soldiers will come and go but Sailor Moon will live on forever in memories and legend.

Who are Sailor Cosmos and Chibi Chibi?

Sailor Cosmos is the final and ultimate form of Sailor Moon. It is her last incarnation. Sailor Moon has many forms and incarnations - from Princess Selenity, to Sailor Moon, to Usagi, to Super SM, and Eternal SM, and Neo-Queen Selenity. Sailor Cosmos is another form of Usagi.

In the future, Sailor Cosmos battles Chaos again and fails, deciding to go back in time to guide her former self - Eternal SM - onto the right path - to destroy Chaos in the Galaxy Cauldron.

She doesn't go back in her present form, she disguises herself as an adorable little girl named Chibi Chibi. It is important she disguise herself as an innocent, harmless child because during those last volumes of the manga, new evil Senshi are showing up right and left and Sailor Cosmos could be mistaken for an enemy - not to mention the fact that she looks almost exactly like Sailor Moon.
