When Japanese animators took Naoko Takeuchi's popular manga, Bishoujo
Senshi Sailor Moon, and made it into a children's anime, they not only
changed many parts of the story line, they changed the personalities of
the characters as well. Usagi went from a mature, responsible woman to a
crybaby, Venus went from a fearless leader to an airhead, Mamoru went
from a powerful, tender and romantic man to a weak, insensitive jerk, and
Rei,
she became so hot-tempered, sarcastic, and argumentative, and they
even had her making heart-shaped eyes at Tuxedo Kamen, despite the fact
that in the manga, Rei has repeatedly said she does not like men, doesn't
trust them, and that it is the MEN who fall all over themselves for Rei -
not the other way around.
The beautiful senshi of Fire, Hino Rei, is a complex woman in the Sailor
Moon manga, and a far cry from her
anime counterpart. The Soldier of Mars comes alive between the pages of
Naoko's story, revealing a woman who has been hurt by her family, by her
love, yet finding peace and purpose in serving the one she most loves,
Selenity. Here you will find detailed articles covering the many aspects
of Hino Rei in the Japanese manga. It is easy to dislike, even hate Rei in
the anime or dub, but the manga shows us a far deeper, much richer side to
Rei, one that I love and respect. Enjoy your visit to this shrine.
